"Each painting is a journey and an adventure. I don't understand the process completely. Perhaps no one can."
— Dorothy Fratt
Springford worked in this style from 1957 to 1963, painting in oil to create broad gestural works that were heavily inspired by Chinese calligraphy and other forms of Eastern thought. She emphasized the importance of direct, intentional mark making in this body of work, and the significance of accepting its immediate finality rather than reworking a composition. The expressive brushwork on display here marks some of Springford’s earliest explorations into abstraction.
